Advanced Compositon- This course builds on the conventions and techniques of composition though critical reading requirements and longer, more sophisticated reports, including a documented library research paper.

Welcome

Greetings!  Your Course Shell provides you with several examples of possible assignments.  This LibGuides will address some of those while introducing resources to assist you with your research. These will fall in four broad categories.

Background Sources
These are resources to help you develop a basic understanding of a topic and perhaps help you locate resources for your Project.  These are typically online encyclopedias and dictionaries which are a useful starting point and helpful for background information.  These resources typically should not appear in your final draft.

Library Databases
There are online reference and periodical resources to which DeVry University subscribes.  You may be familiar with some of these while others may be new to you.

Books
Most of the Library's books are eBooks which can be read on your device.  You may also request print books from any of the onsite Libraries.

Open Access
There are a growing number of online journals which are usually free to the reader.  They are self-archiving and sometimes free of  copyright and licensing restrictions (you still must cite them if you use them).  Their costs are supported by publication fees paid by authors or are externally subsidized.  The quality of open access publications varies considerably.  Some are quite reputable while others are fronts for special interest groups.

This course is part of the general education program. General education coursework is oriented toward challenges and issues of the contemporary world. Student achievement of general education competencies includes demonstrating ability in the following eight areas.

  • Communicate clearly with particular audiences for particular purposes.
  • Work collaboratively to help achieve individual and group goals.
  • Apply critical thinking skills in learning, conducting applied research, and defining and solving problems. 
  • Develop tolerance for ambiguity and mature judgment in exploring intellectual issues. 
  • Build on intellectual curiosity with fundamental concepts and methods of inquiry from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities to support lifelong learning.
  • Apply mathematical principles and concepts to problem solving and logical reasoning.
  • Use study and direct experience of the humanities and social sciences to develop a clear perspective on the breadth and diversity, as well as the commonality, of human experience.
  • Connect general education to the ethical dimensions of issues as well as to responsible, thoughtful citizenship in a democratic society.

General education competencies 1–4 are emphasized in this course.
